Studio blog: online Derwent Inktense pencils workshop with Colin Woodward

Last Friday I took some time out for myself and took an online workshop with Colin Woodward on using Derwent Inktense pencils. I use these pencils a lot for precise colour and shading in my Celtic knotwork artwork, but wanted to learn some new techniques with them.

We went through two different exercises to warm up and feel our way into the scene. The first exercise was just to use one dark pencil to create a monotone piece, and the second was to use two pencils using a blue and a red to pick out the different areas of contrast in the scene. The pencil sketches were both worked into with water once they were drawn.

Study two

Once we had completed these two studies, we moved on to working on the final colour scene. We were encouraged not to draw every little detail with the Inktense pencils, rather to add areas of colour and texture and then more detail could be brought out by activating the pencils with the water.

I still need to work on using different pressure with the pencils in order to create different values of tone, but I was still very pleased with my result. There will be more experimenting with these pencils in the future.

It was a really enjoyable class and I would definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to learn more about the Derwent Inktense pencils.

Here’s Colin’s final piece:
