Studio blog: online workshop with Koosje Koene
I’m expanding my knowledge of ink and watercolour at the moment, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. As well as going on a workshop in Durham with Toby Haseler last August, I’m also taking his online classes. Earlier this month I saw that Koosje Koene was running an online workshop, so I decided to attend. It was all about how to depict snowy scenes. We worked on three scenes of Koosje’s home town, Amersfoort, in The Netherlands, and had just 20 minutes to draw and paint each scene.
We drew along with Koosje, with her showing us how she was tackling the scene. We were free to work along with her, or put our own interpretation on to the scenes. I’ll put Koosje’s Instagram post about the workshop below, so that you can see her interpretation of the scenes.
I really enjoyed being pushed out of my comfort zone and learning something new in this workshop, letting the white space and different shadows do the work of depicting the snow. I was very pleased with the results, considering we only had 20 minutes per drawing. If I had had more time, then I would have added more contrast, but I am going to leave these drawings as they are in my sketchbook to truly represent what I achieved on the workshop.
Here’s Koosje’s work:
