Finished artwork: Amongst the Ivy

I finished this Celtic knotwork drawing this afternoon, so this really is hot off the press!

It’s a 5 inch x 7inch piece and has been created for this year’s Postcard Art Exhibit, which will take place in McKinney, Texas, later this year. It will be available to buy as part of the exhibition, and all proceeds will go to help other artists in the McKinney area. Please see the Postcard Art Exhibit website for more details.
UPDATE: this postcard is now listed at:

and will be available for sale online from 24 September 2024.

The main motif is a knot from the Ormesby Psalter (ca. 1250 – 1330), which you can see in the Bodleian Library digital collection under ‘MS. Douce 366’, on Fol. 147v. If you have a look at the folio, you will see the knot is just a very small motif in the bottom right hand corner. It took me some time to calculate the angles in order to recreate this knot, but it was a great exercise and worth it! This knot echoes leaf illustrations that are on the same page, hence the three points in each section. I echoed those with my own ivy leaves, and dotted a few ladybirds and bees around.

I drew the knots in Faber-Castell PITT artist pens and then worked in Derwent Inktense and Graphitint pencils. Titled ‘Amongst the Ivy’.
